Introductory Meeting with the Farmers
27 February 2009, Magadi
Identification of potential and eligible urban producers and target area and introductory meeting
Under this we have identified around 73 urban producers and included them into the project. Out of which 57 are men and 16 are women producers and we made them into four sub groups. The selected women are the members of the Kalanjiam Self Help Group organized by DHAN Foundation. All the selected members are small and marginal farmers and their major occupation is agriculture. The average land holding of the members is around 10 cents to 25 cents and the major crops grown are vegetables.
The members were selected based on some of the criteria like,
- They should be practicing the crop production in general and vegetable production in particular.
- All the members should come under the category of small and marginal farmers based on their land holding
- They should be co-operative enough to be in project and act accordingly
- Those who do not have structured and outside marketing facilities for their produces
- The members should have assured irrigation facilities either on their own or borrow water from neighboring farmers on rental basis
One after identifying the potential members in the target area we have made them into sub groups. Each group has been named with suffix of agriculture development institution. From each group three representatives have been selected to take lead in the programme and act as contact persons. The group members have selected the representatives by considering their leadership qualities and commitment towards leading the group.
